Tape Nail Art

I painted my nails a lovely Autumn color a few days ago - brown. It's simple, and I like it a lot. But as it goes, the nails start to chip or the edges start to fade a little.  They weren't chipping very much, but it was starting to annoy me.

So what better time to try some scotch tape nail art that I've been looking at on Pinterest?! Since my nails were brown, I decided to go with the always popular brown/pink combination.

The brown I used first was from Mary Kay, color Lavish Sable. (I am a MK consultant after all.) The pink I used on top was from Revlon, color 115 - Peach Petal. I HATED this Revlon polish when I first tried it out, but I've gotten used to its consistency since then. We're friends now.

Here are my fading nails...

I saw this pin, and I'm seriously not that talented. I can barely get the color on my nails. I decided to go with a simple diagonal line for my first try at this technique.

I hope this is the correct source. It looks like the site got their picture from Pinterst, so if you know another source for this, please let me know.

So I put the tape on my nails, and I accidentally had to adjust my tape on my middle finger. And the first casualty of my experiment was quick and painless. I did cry a little bit because now I realized that I would have to start from scratch if this didn't work out. Well, crud.

The same thing happened on my ring finger. Ugggh! I seriously considered giving up on the whole thing at this point. But for the sake of experimentation I pushed forward, hoping for some redemption.

I decided to invert the tape for the ring and middle finger to cover up the parts that peeled off. I'm so smart, right??

I painted, and then removed the tape. I tried to take the tape off in a direction so it wouldn't peel off my polish. That worked okay until I got to my pinky. That was VERY sad. I was actually very hopeful until that point.

I was pretty impressed with how it turned out. Not too shabby. You can see the bump from where I accidentally peeled it off with the tape.

Looks pretty okay, except that dang pinky. There was a tiny bit of redemption. I was thinking about doing it to my other hand, and then I decided it wasn't good enough to keep.

Result: Well I only half failed, and I half succeeded! Glass half full, right? Yes! Even though I immediately took it all off and painted a new color, it was a fun experiment.

So here are some tips that I learned from trying out this pin:
1. Make sure you have a good polish on for the base coat that won't peel off easily when taking tape off. I'm not sure how you would know this. They should put that on the bottle. That's normal, right?
2. Have a back-up plan of how to fix it if/when it fails or takes off a little bit of polish. On my pinky, there was no way for me to fix that. That was a main reason I just scrapped the whole thing and did not try the other hand.
3. Maybe there would be better tape to use than Scotch tape? Perhaps a less sticky tape? That would be silly, considering tape is supposed to be sticky.

Anyway, ultimately I failed. But I don't think it was operator error. It was more of the product not being great to use with tape on my nails. Maybe other brands will not peel off as easily.

We have some projects in progress and on the way to the blog. Look forward to that and Happy Pinning!!!
